Commuters to face problems for three days due to strike

Wednesday, 31 August 2016 | PNS | Dehradun

The commuters across the state are bound to face problems for three days starting from Thursday due to the strike call given by a powerful section of roadways employees. On the demands of regularizing the contractual workers in Uttarakhand roadways the Uttaranchal Roadways Karamchari Union has decided to go on a strike from September 01 – 03.  The strike call was given by the union at its Haldwani convention on August 28. Meanwhile in a fire fighting exercise the roadways administration has invited the leaders of the association for talks on Wednesday. The General Secretary of the organisation, Ashok Choudhary said that as of now the association is adamant on the strike call. He said that a cabinet sub committee had recently recommended that all contractual workers working for more than five years would be regularized but the MD of roadways is trying to sabotage the regularization of more than 2000 employees of roadways by categorizing them as outsource workers.

The call of the organisation is sure to affect the fleet of roadways as almost all the drivers and conductors of the state carrier are members of this organisation. The fleet of the state roadways comprises 1250 buses. The daily cash flow of the state roadways is `1.25 crore per day. More than 1.40 lakhs commute daily in the buses of state transport carrier.
