Punjab’s longest bridge, 1.50 kms Rahon-Mattewara stretch, would be dedicated to the people in October this year. The work on the same is currently underway across Satluj. With its commencement, the bridge would open new vistas of development, said a spokesperson from the State Public Works Department on Thursday.
He said that on its completion, the distance between Nawanshahr and ludhiana would be cut short by 19 kilometres.
“The 1.50-km long stretch of the bridge is being constructed at a cost of Rs 70 crore…Earlier, the length of the bridge was 0.75 km but with the increase in width of natural flow of Satluj River towards Rahon considerably, the length of the bridge had to be increased accordingly,” said the spokesperson.
He said that besides approach roads, there would be as many as 34 spans having 1,219.6 metre length. The part falling in ludhiana district has been already been completed and now the bridge and approach road from Rahon side would be constructed.
The work is going on at war level as the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has been taking keen interest in realising the dream of the residents of Doaba region to connect them with Malwa region by ensuring shortest distance between the two. The bridge would not just minimise the distance but it will ultimately prove a boon for giving a fillip to trade and industry in the state, he said.
