Haryana CM's constituency Karnal included in list of Smart City Mission

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal Khattar’s constituency — Karnal has been included in the list of 30 smart cities declared by the Union Ministry of Urban Development in New Delhi on Friday.

The announcement of names of 30 cities was made by the Union Urban Development Minister, M Venkaiah Naidu.

Following the announcement, Chief Minister Manohar lal congratulated the residents of  Karnal and posted on Twitter, “Thank you @MVenkaiahNaidu ji for selecting Karnal among the 30 #SmartCities. Congratulations to the residents of #Karnal.”

Earlier, Haryana’s Faridabad had got selected for funding under smart city mission in fast track round of competition. An investment of Rs 2,600 crore has been approved under the smart city plan of Faridabad and a special purpose vehicle is also set up for the implementation of the smart city mission.

Apart from this, the Central Government has assured to provide technical support to Haryana for developing Gurugram as a smart city.

Outlining broad contours of the plan for developing Karnal as a smart city, Anand Mohan Sharan, Haryana Principal Secretary, Urban local Bodies Department, said that Karnal smart city project would be implemented by Karnal Smart City ltd., an SPV (special purpose vehicle) which would be set up soon. The SPV will include senior government  officials on its Board of Directors, and have elected officials such as Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor etc. on the advisory council of the SPV.

The smart city plan of Karnal had been allocated Rs 1295.81 crore.

One of the prominent agencies in India, CRISIl (Credit Rating Information Services of India ltd.) has been selected to prepare the smart city proposal after doing ground survey and having technical consultation with Karnal MC and agencies of the Government, he said.

Under the area based development, being proposed on an area of 720 acres in Karnal, different projects such as Projects Mela, Pahal, Pragati, Pravaah, Saksham, Uphaar Utthan, Ashiana, Kaushal  will be executed for sustainable development of Karnal. In this area, Smart Urbanism through underground electric wiring, smart metering for water and electricity, recreational facilities, smart roads with non-motorized transport tracks will be developed.

Besides, city bus service with city bus terminus, re-designing of busy traffic intersections, construction of walkways and cycle tracks will be developed.

The smart city plan also include implementation of smart parking, development of Central Business District (CBS), setting up of smart vending zones with IT solutions for street vendors, beautification of parks, projects like rain water harvesting  system, renewable energy, smart sewerage management, water supply system, solid waste management, modern storm water drainage system, housing for urban poor and skill development centre.  This area based development project will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 1061.50 crore, said Sharan.
