A twisted tale

Chandrakanta is making a comeback on two channels together and television actress Kritika Kamra talks about the life OK version of the show. Ankita Jain reports

Kritika Kamra, who became a household name with Kitni Mohabbat Hai and Kuch Toh log Kahenge, will now be seen playing Chandrakanta in Nikhil Sinha’s production for life OK. The thrill of doing a costume drama attracted Kritika for the project. “I have never been part of a costume drama before. I had watched the first Chandrakanta as a child, but nostalgia isn’t the reason I am taking it up. I found the script interesting. The central character is not only a beautiful woman, but she’s also a fighter and has a sense of purpose. Audiences will also see me on the battle ground in the later episodes.”

A modern interpretation of the classic novel with the same name, the show focuses on the journey of Virendra Singh whose cosmic love for Chandrakanta paves way to his destiny, something which is unknown to him as well. It is a love story where destiny shall see them come together to create magic.

life OK and Colors are bringing fresh adaptations of the popular novel, which inspired the TV series of the same name in 1994. While the one on life OK is being produced by Nikhil Sinha, who earlier helmed the much-loved mythological series Siya Ke Ram, Devon ke Dev…Mahadev and Hatim, the Colors show is being made under the banner of Balaji Telefilms. And it had been reported that Ekta Kapoor and Nikhil are at loggerheads over this big budget prestigious project.  “I had no clue about two producers working on the same subject. I realised it only when I saw both the teasers on the internet. Ekta has given me memorable shows and I am still remembered as Arohi from Kitani Mohabbat Hai. The rivalry could be between the channels or the production houses, but not between Ekta and me. We are friends and she even wished me luck for the show,” explained Kritika who is on a detox diet to look as radiant as a princess. Understanding that the original Chandrakanta is still remembered for its perfect casting, opulent sets and crisp plot, both the new version have a tough competition to match upto that.

About women being objectified in the industry, Kritika said, “I will take woman as a sex symbol over woman as a victim any day. Yes, women are objectified and we can see how it reflects in our society. But I also have to say that, certain part of our job involves looking desirable.”

The first promo gives a sneak peek into the emotions of love, lust, greed, betrayal and an insight into the tilism world. The promo showcases Chandrakanta, an epitome of beauty who has been desired by everyone.
