With the arrest of four men and a juvenile, the South district police have solved the murder of a 45-year-old businessman, who was stabbed to death by unidentified men in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar on February 8.
Police said Sanjay Chawla, a property dealer and financier, was stabbed multiple times in front of his house around 8 pm, soon after he left his office located near his home on February 8.
Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) said, “The arrested accused have been identified as Dinesh (22), Manjot Singh (48), Rajender Singh (30) and Rohit Thakur (30). “Manjot Singh, a businessman dealing with gemstones in Malviya Nagar conspired to kill Sanjay Chawla who had given him
Rs . 52 lakhs loan over a monthly interest. later, when Singh failed to pay off his debts, Chawla started asking him for money due to which the latter felt embarrassed and insulted.”
The officer said that Manjot then roped in his friend, Rajender, and Rohit and planned to pay them Rs 5 lakh who further hired two budding criminals, Dinesh and a juvenile both residents of Ambedkar Nagar to bump off Chawla for Rs 35,000 each.
To execute their plan, they started doing a recee of Sanjay's office and residence. Baaniya said, “On February 8, Dinesh and the juvenile followed Sanjay from his office and finally
Dinesh stabbed Sanjay while juvenile kept a watch near the scene. After ensuring that Sanjay is dead, both fled from the spot. Both of them were paid as per the contract and told to remain in hiding for a while.”
Police said that they were reported about a man getting stabbed at Block l in Malviya Nagar on the same day and he was taken to the Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital and thereafter referred to Max Hospital, Saket. DCP said that doctors claimed that the victim was unfit for statement due to which his statement could not be recorded on the very day. later, he succumbed to injuries. A case of murder was registered at Malviya Nagar police station and an investigation was taken up.
A team led by Virender Dalal, Station House Officer of Malviya Nagar started the investigation. During enquiry, it was revealed that Sanjay Chawla used to provide loans against monthly interest. The scrutiny of the financial records recovered from the office of Chawla, technical surveillance, local inquiries of all the suspected persons relating to the financial deals with the deceased was done.
On analyzing the same, police zeroed down on Manjot Singh, who used to take loans from Sanjay Chawla. Some CCTV footage was also scrutinized in which accused were seen roaming at the scene of the crime.
Based on a tip off, Dinesh and the juvenile were apprehended from Chirag Delhi area. During their interrogation, they disclosed that they were hired by Rajender and received Rs 35,000 for this act.
On their instance, Rajender was arrested and police also recovered the knife used to stab the deceased. On interrogation, Rajender told police that Manjot Singh was the prime conspirator behind the plan. Singh was too arrested following Rajender's revelation. However, an investigation is still on to inquire the role of other associates.
