As many as 76 candidates have filed nominations to contest elections for Mayor and 757 candidates for municipal councillors in five Municipal Corporations and two Municipal Committees of Haryana to be held on December 16.
The ruling BJP and main opposition party, Indian National Lok Dal are contesting on party symbol in the election. On the other hand, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party are not contesting these polls.
It would be for the first time that direct election to the post of mayor would be held in five civic bodies in Haryana.
The election is for the seats of mayor and members of all wards of five Municipal Corporations including Hisar, Rohtak, Yamunanagar, Panipat and Karnal and of two Municipal committees including Jakhal Mandi (Fatehabad) and Pundri (Kaithal). The result will be announced on December 19.
The civic body polls is seen as a litmus test for the BJP and INLD to gauge the voters’ mood ahead of Lok Sabha and assembly polls scheduled to be held next year in Haryana.
