The state government has issued separate notifications for renaming Faizabad district and division as Ayodhya district and division. The government also issued notification for renaming Allahabad division as Prayagraj division. The notifications were issued by the government with the approval of Governor Ram Naik.
The Governor approved the publication of the notification in pursuance to provision of Clause (3) of Article 348 of the Indian Constitution. The notification was issued by the state government in exercise of its powers under UP Revenue Code, 2006, State Reorganisation Act, 1956, and UP State Reorganisation Act, 2000. As per the notification, nothing shall affect any legal proceeding already commenced or pending in any court of law.
On November 6, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced that Faizabad district would be renamed as Ayodhya which is located in Faizabad district and is at the centre of Ram temple dispute. While announcing the name change at annual Diwali festivities in Ayodhya, Yogi had said: “Ayodhya is a symbol of our ‘aan, baan aur shaan’†(honour, pride and prestige).
The CM also announced that a new airport named after Lord Rama and a new medical college named after Raja Dashrath (Lord Ram’s father) would be set up in Ayodhya.
Earlier on October 14, Yogi had announced to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj. Notification for renaming Allahabad as Prayagraj district has already been issued while notification for renaming Allahabad division as Prayagraj division was issued on Friday.
