Anna ends fast on satisfactory note

Wednesday, 06 February 2019 | TN RAGHUNATHA | Mumbai

Renowned social activist Anna Hazare on Tuesday ended his seven-day-long fast in his native village of

Ralegan-Siddhi in western Maharashtra, following his six-hour-long marathon with Maharashtra chief Devendra Fadnavis and others.

During his meeting with Hazare, Fadnavis — who was accompanied by Union Agriculture Minister Radhe Mohan and Union Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre — assured the fasting Gandhian that the Centre would take necessary steps regarding the appointment of Lokpal based on the Supreme Court’s directions and that he would convene a meeting February 16 to discuss and decide on the issue of appointing a new Lokayukta in the State.

Eight one-year-old Hazare, who had been fasting since January 30 to demand among other things the immediate appointment of Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in various States, broke his fast after the Chief Minister gave him written assurances on his various demands.

Apart from Lokpal and Lokayukta, Hazare’s other demands were: the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s report on farmers”, one-and-half times of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for agriculture produce, total loan waiver for farmers and monthly pension of at least Rs 5,000 to every farmer in the country.

Alluding to Hazare’s demand that the Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP) be independent body, Fadnavis said, “The Government has appointed an independent chairman for CACP”.

On the issue of Minimum Support Price (MSP), Union Agriculture Minister Radhe Mohan and Fadnavis said the State Government had already announced MSP of 50 per cent over the cost of production to the farmers.

Radhe Mohan assured Hazare that the Centre would appoint a committee under the chairmanship of the Union Agriculture Minister, to make recommendations for fixing MSPs for farm produce based on a comprehensive measure of cultivation costs that includes the imputed cost of capital and the rent on the land, called ‘C2’.

Fadnavis said the State Government had requested the Centre to increase the quantum of assistances to former under “Shetkari Sanman Yojana”. “The Centre has accepted our demand. I have also told the Centre that the State Government also wants to share the financial burden,” the Chief Minister said.

An upset Hazare had on Monday charged that the BJP had “forgotten” him and his Lok Pal agitation after “using” him in 2013 to come to power at the Centre in 2014.

Talking to mediapersons in his native village of Ralegan-Siddhi in Ahmednagar district of western Maharashtra, Hazare had also contended that the BJP-led Maharashtra government was making “false” claims about having a majority of his demands and that he had no trust left in the Devendra Fadnavis dispensation in the State.

“The State Government has not accepted any of my demands. If I have accepted 90 per cent of my demands, why would I be continuing my fast. I have no trust left in this Government. I had received a message from the official channels that a Union Minister and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would come and meet me today. But, I had sent a message back asking them not to come and said if said they came there would be unnecessary confusion in the minds of people,” Hazare had said.

Asked to comment on the statement made by MNS chief Raj Thackeray after his meeting with him on Monday that the BJP “used” him during his 2013 agitation, Hazare said, “Whatever Raj Thackeray has said is true. Entire country knows the truth. Because of 2013 Lok Pal agitation that the BJP came to power at the Centre. But, the same BJP has forgotten me and my Lok Pal agitation in 2013. It is unfortunate that both the BJP and AAP no longer talk about Lok Pal or Lokayukta”
