After several incidents including murder, snatching were reported in national Capital, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday hit out at Bharatiya Janta Party’s (BJP) Members of Parliament from Delhi for not raising the city’s crime issues in Parliament in the last five years.
“Delhi has elected BJP MPs for the second time this year. In the last five years, how many times have any of them raised the issue of security in Parliament? Not even once,” said Saurabh Bharadwaj, AAP spokesperson, while addressing media persons on Tuesday.
“The seven BJP MPs need to step out of their homes and comfort zones and take responsibility,” he added. Targeting senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition (LOP) in the Delhi Assembly Vijender
Gupta, Atishi Marlena said that the wife of the LOP, Shobha Gupta, who has been a councillor in the MCD in the past, became a victim of daylight robbery at a market in Mandi House.
“Her bag was stolen from her. This has happened in the centre of the city. If the wife of a sitting MLA and Leader of Opposition is not safe in Delhi, how will ordinary people feel secure? Each time the people of Delhi or the elected government raised questions on the functioning of the police, Vijender Gupta has come out to defend the police,” said Atishi.
“When Delhi Chief Minister was attacked, the LoP found no fault with the police and openly defended its role. I hope that at least now the BJP will realise what a common man goes through in Delhi because of the lack of action by Delhi Police,” said Atishi adding that Centre’s only responsibility in Delhi is to ensure security.
However, speaking with The Pioneer, Madhur Verma, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), New Delhi district and PRO said that Delhi Police has ensured maximum visibility on road through integrated picket checking, foot patrolling, PCR vans and GPS fitted Raftaar Motorcycles, whose movements can be monitored; for effective crime prevention.
“These measures, supervised regularly by senior officers, have yielded extremely positive results, in the form of downward trend in heinous crimes, crimes against women and heinous crimes against senior citizens.
These statistics are a part of computerized record, and cannot be disputed,” said the DCP.
“The case being referred to is one of diverting attention of motorists to steal things from a car. Delhi Police has time and again issued advertisements and released radio jingles to alert people and make them aware about the tactics of such miscreants, who divert attention of the person at the wheel with an intent to lift belongings. Delhi Police has busted many such Thak-Thak Gangs in the recent past,” the DCP added.
