The Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre (DMMC) is holding a series of capacity-building programmes for the officials of Education Department of the State to introduce them to various aspects of disaster risk reduction, particularly with reference to schools and students. The first of these residential programmes of five days’ duration began on Monday at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Center for Training and Research in Financial Administration at Dehradun.
The event was inaugurated by DMMC executive director Piyoosh Rautela.
Speaking on the occasion, Rautela introduced the participants to the rich tradition of disaster safety of the region and highlighting particularly the high vulnerability of the students impressed upon the need for inculcating a culture of disaster safety among the students. Besides participants, Bhupendra Bhaisora and Ghanshyam Tamta of DMMC were present on this occasion.
Officials of Education and Finance departments were thanked for nominating participants and providing logistics support respectively.
As per officials, the DMMC holds the conviction that mass awareness holds the key to voluntary compliance of various safety and security measures and techniques and awareness of the school children, can in particular bring forth massive change with regard to this, both in short and long term. It is at the same time realised that no single institution or organisation can reach each and every student spread across length and breath of the State.
It is with the objective of making a difference in the scenario that these programmes would take the message of disaster safety to the nook and corners of the state and bring forth disaster resilience among the masses.
