Family of longest serving SGPC prez Tohra, joins SAD

Sunday, 21 April 2019 | PNS | Patiala

In what could boost the morale of Shiromani Akali Dal cadres in Punjab, the entire family of the late Akali stalwart and the longest-serving SGPC president Jathedar Gurcharan Singh on Saturday rejoined the SAD here.

Jathedar Tohra's son in law Jathedar Harmel Singh Tohra, daughter Biba Kuldip Kaur and grandson Harinder Pal Singh Tohra joined SAD in the presence of party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. He said the panthic mainstream stands united again.

The development comes close on the heels of the former Congress leaders Jagmeet Singh Brar and Ripjit Singh Brar joining SAD a day before.

Badal presented siropas to those who joined the party and sweets were distributed among party workers on the occasion.

Addressing reporters, Badal said that former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would be the happiest person today as his wish of seeing brothers' family living in one home has been fulfilled.

The SAD president said that ever since his childhood, he had observed that for more

than half a century, the Badal-Tohra duo had been a part of the religio-political psyche of the people of Punjab. The two waged long and most difficult struggles together and steered the Panth out of severe crises.

Answering a query on the leaders of a breakaway faction of Akalis, Badal described Ranjit Singh Brahampura like his father saying he cannot comment against those whom he has respected.

"I hold Jathedar Brahampura, Jathedar Sekhwan and Dr Rattan Singh Ajnala in the highest esteem- and always will , no matter what provocation," said Badal.

Asked about the poll prospects of his party in the Patiala constituency, Badal said that  the main fight there was between SAD candidate Surjit Singh Rakhra and Dharamvir Gandhi.

He said Congress nominee Preneet Kaur will finish a poor third.
