Two days after the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) figures showed that Uttar Pradesh topped the crime list in the country, Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati on Wednesday questioned the law and order situation in the state.
Citing the NCRB report, the former chief minister of UP slammed the incumbent government and tweeted, “After a long delay, the National Crime Records Bureau has issued statistics related to crime. The data is now in the public domain. The data clearly indicates that the state and Central governments need to work with conviction to address the crime issues, especially regarding women’s safety. The situation of Uttar Pradesh is the worst and this is at a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party is in power both in the state and at the Centre.”
Mayawati further claimed that the NCRB data do not bolster the image of the country.
“The National Crime Records Bureau has presented the statistics of crime in front of the country and world after a long delay. They naturally have made big headlines in the media and they are definitely not improving the image of India, which is a matter of great sorrow and concern,” Mayawati tweeted.
The government on October 21 released the NCRB report on 2017 crime statistics. The report states that over 50 lakhs cognisable crimes were registered in the country that year. In 2017, majority of the cases under crimes against women out of total IPC crimes against women were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives’ (33.2%) followed by ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ (27.3%), ‘Kidnapping & Abduction of Women’ (21.0%) and ‘Rape’ (10.3%), the report claimed.
The NCRB, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is responsible for collecting and analysing crime data as defined by the Indian Penal Code, as well as special and local laws in the country.
