Protesting Jamia students beaten by ‘goons’ on campus

Wednesday, 23 October 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Some protesting students of Jamia Millia Islamia alleged that on administration’s direction some “goons” allegedly attacked them while they were protesting peacefully in front of the Vice Chancellor's office on Tuesday at 6 pm seeking withdrawal of show-cause notices served on five students over protest at an international event on the campus on October 5. “Instead of talking to the Jamia students, Jamia Vice Chancellor and administration called bouncers who attacked protesting students. All this happened in presence of Jamia guards who stood there silently. Some students were rushed to hospital,” said a student requesting anonymity.

However, a senior university official rejected students’ claim and said no outsiders were allowed entry into the campus and the fight between students erupted after protesting students didn’t give way to volunteers (students) of an event on the campus to remove their vehicles. The students claimed that the goons beat them up with belts, sticks, potted plants for over half an hour and all the while, the university bulls were mute spectator. Some students were rushed to hospitals and even girl students were not sparred as they were molested by the rampaging goons, said students. The students have been on hunger strike for the past nine days against the show cause notices issued to students over their anti-Israel protest on the campus on October 5.
