PWD plans to re-develop Chirag Dilli to Sheikh Sarai stretch

Saturday, 02 November 2019 | GAYATHRI MANI | NEW DELHI

The long standing demand of Lajpat Nagar traders is going to fructify soon as the Public Works Department (PWD) has made a plan to de-congest, streetscape and beautification of the three major choking points of central Market, Shiv Mandir Marg, Feroz Gandhi Marg and Veer Sawarkar Marg. PWD is also planning to re-develop the city's infamous stretch from Chirag Dilli to Sheikh Sarai. The roads will be developed on the European standards, said the officials.

The main aim behind the redevelopment of these roads is to de-congest and to also create a smooth traffic movement with proper plan and separate lanes for pedestrians and E-rickshaws. Also, the traders of Lajpat Nagar central market were demanding for pedestrian friendly paths and parking lots for quite a long period now.

"With this 3km stretch on Lajpat Nagar central market, a multilevel parking at the exiting park situated in circle is also planned. The tender for the project will be soon invited," said a senior PWD official.

Streetscaping, beautification, widening and strengthening of roads and repairing of pavements, footpaths, construction of under passes, decongestion of intersections, improving of road geometry and safety, smooth and accessible paths to persons with disabilities will be done on these two major sections of South Delhi infamous for traffic hurdles.

"The Chirag Dilli to Shiekh Sarai stretch witnesses a heavy traffic clogs daily. Currently, a PWD is working with Delhi Traffic Police to implement the 'U-Turn' scheme to end the slow traffic movement. Further, under this plan, the roads will be beautified and widened with facilities such as separate cycle track, disabled friendly footpaths, shrubs and herbs will be planted to beautify the area. Non-motorised vehicles (NMV) lane, public transport and walking, user-friendly roads, fun and a better quality of life and a sense of well being for pedestrians and commuters is in the plan," said a PWD official.

"In these roads there is no facility for NMV vehicles and pedestrians, termination of services lanes at junctions, parking are very close to intersections which hinder the movements. Further, safe pedestrian crossings, footpaths, refuges and missing road markings, signage and signals are missing. Moreover, due to the poor condition of the street, kerbs and street furniture's the barrier free movement becomes impossible," said the official.

It is also to be remember that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also announced the re-development of 10 other major roads of Delhi such as  Ring Ring Road from Mayapuri to Moti Bagh Junction, Satguru Ram Singh (Road no. 36) Marg from Mayapuri Chowk to SD Public School,  Britannia Chowk to Outer to Ring Roads, West Enclave, Pritampura, Road no.41and 41-A from Wazirpur Depot Crossing (NSP) to Rithala Metro Station, Sewadham Road from road No.-63 to UP Border Delhi and  Shivdaspuri Marg and Patel Road (from Moti Nagar T-Point to Pusa Road about) and the 2.3 kilometres Narwana Road Mother Dairy to Punch Mahal Niwas.
