Rs 100-crore BGRIE funds to boost rice yield in State

With positive results pouring in the State so far as rice yield is concerned, it has been decided to pump in over Rs 100 crore in a national programme being implemented in Odisha for qualitative improvement in agriculture sector.

Bringing Green Revolution In Eastern India (BGREI) now being implemented in the State has brought in positive results, reveals a review held under chairmanship of Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC) Gagan Kumar Dhal recently.

The BGREI is a sub scheme implemented under Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojana (RKVY) and in 2019-20 it is being implemented in 22 districts, including Mayurbhanj, Baleswar, Bhadrakh, Bargarh, Balangir, Boudh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Nayagarh, Puri, Khorda, Kendrapada, Jagatisnghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack and Dhenkanal.

Under BGREI programme, cluster demonstrations were taken up in more than 37,000 hectares and crop cutting report has revealed much higher results in rice yield during 2018-19 Kharif season.

As per targeted approach taken up under BGREI, 37, 412 hectares were taken up under cluster demonstration and crop cutting report says that there has been increase of over 27 percent yield in rice production in comparison to other plots.

Each cluster consists of 100 hectares and variety of cluster demonstrations like Direct Seeded Rice (DSR), Line Transplanting (LT), SRI, Stress Tolerant Varieties (STV), Hybrid Rice (HR) and Cropping System Based (CSB) Interventions are being taken up.

Similarly production of seeds was taken up in BGREI and both hybrid seeds and certified seeds productions were taken up under BGREI, which has yielded positive results, said a senior officer of the Department of Agriculture.

While target was 21,181 quintal of seeds, in physical terms 43,453 quintal was produced in cluster demonstrations.

Both on rice and seeds production, BGREI has brought out positive results, said the official.

Action Plan for 2019-20 was discussed threadbare in the meeting and it was approved as positive results are showing in cluster demonstrations.

For 2019-20, the action plan has been formulated with allocation of Rs 101.88 crore and out of which Central share is Rs 61.13 crore and State share is Rs  40.75 crore, said the official.
