SUNNY VIOLATING CODE, HOODWINKING EC: CONG

Tuesday, 07 May 2019 | PNS | Chandigarh

Punjab Congress vice-president Himanshu Pathak on Monday sought from the poll panel to “cancel” the nomination of SAD-BJP combine candidate Sunny Deol for allegedly giving “false information” in his affidavit regarding his social media account.

“I have given complaint to the Election Commission of India as well as Punjab’s election commission requesting to cancel the nomination for giving false information in affidavit,” he said.

Pathak claimed that an “unauthorized unaccounted paid campaign is being run on the social media’s major platform — Facebook — from the page ‘Fans of Sunny Deol’ which was created April 30, and lakhs of money has been spent within five days to reach out to seven to eight lakh voters on the Facebook in the constituency and lakhs in Punjab. This is a clear violation of election code of conduct because promotion on social media can be done only from official social media accounts which are given in nomination papers”.

He added that the promotion on social media should be approved by the Election Commission’s media certification and monitoring committee which is also violated. “Sunny Deol’s election campaign may even exceed the election expenditure limit given by the Commission which is Rs 70 lakh,” he said.

Pathak also claimed that Sunnny Deol has also violated the rules set by the Facebook in India which says that during election period, anyone who runs political advertisements will give a disclaimer that this ad is run by whom, following which the Facebook has taken down its few advertisements.
