Uproar in Assembly again over Vaisnaw issue

Thursday, 27 June 2019 | PABITRA SENAPATY | BHUBANESWAR

The State Assembly continued to witness uproarious scenes for the second day on Wednesday as Congress members insisted that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik make a statement in the House over his party’s decision to support BJP candidate Ashwini Vaishnaw for Rajya Sabha election.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Congress Legislature Party Leader Narasingha Mishra said the Taradatt Committee report has clearly mentioned about the complicity of Vaishnaw in the discretionary quota scam, which is under investigation by the Vigilance department.

He also alleged that Vaishnaw has nexus with mining mafia and wanted to know how the non-Odia Rajya Sabha nominee would serve the interest of the State.

“I appeal to the Chair to direct the Chief Minister to give clarification under what circumstances his party BJD has decided to support the Vaishnaw’s candidature,” demanded Mishra.

As Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro didn’t respond, Congress members led by Tara Prasad Bahinipati rushed to the Well of the House and shouted slogans against the alleged nexus between the BJD and the BJP and demanded a ruling from the Chair.

Unable to run the proceedings, the Speaker adjourned the House for five minutes at 12.41 pm and called for an all-party meeting to discuss the issue.

Subsequently, the House was adjourned for three more times till 1.06 pm.
