Beyond books

While the Jaipur Literature Festival is the centerpiece for the bibliophiles, there is a lot more to do in the city after the sessions are over

It is that time of the year yet again when the largest literature festival in the Asia Pacific region, the Jaipur Literature Festival, returns to enthrall bookworms and even those who are  not-so-literary inclined. With a myriad of literary sessions, performances and more slated to be held at the Diggi Palace hotel, this year’s festival will span over four days, from 24th - 28th January.

But the Pink City holds a lot of attractions for those who wish to delve into more than just books. There are magnificent palaces, colorful bazaars and many other one-of-a-kind experiences that the city has to offer. The following are some places and activities:

The culture fix at Chokhi Dhani

To truly immerse yourself into the rich and vibrant culture of Rajasthan, kickstart your visit with a trip to this village resort which transports you to a realm that is far-removed from the city. Peppered with magic shows, folk dance performances, elephant and camel rides, boating and acrobatics, there is a lot that can hold your attention. There is more that is a delight for your gastronomical senses as well. Savour the traditional Rajasthani fare where you can partake dal-bati-choorma, mawakachori and ghewar among many lip-smacking delicacies.

Shop till you drop at the bazaars

After that much needed disconnect from city life, the perfect way indulge yourself is by taking a trip through the vibrant bazaars. There are hole-in-the-wall shops which can reveal treasures that have their origins in traditions that are thousands of years old. Within these bazaars, you can get everything from carved wooden souvenirs to colorful handicrafts and marble sculptures. You can also find exquisite Rajasthani gold jewelry, Mojaris and chappals and blue pottery that is unique to these locales.

Explore historical forts and palaces

The rich history of the city which was founded in 1727 is reflected in the abundance of mighty forts and palaces in the city. Some of the celebrated architectural monuments include the Jal Mahal, the Amer Fort and the Nahargarh Fort. The architecture of Jal Mahal which is nestled in the Man Sagar Lake amidst the Nahargarh hills,  showcases the amalgamation of Rajput and Mughal styles. The Nahargarh fort offers an unparalleled view of the entire city. The Amer fort is another opulent palace built in red sandstone and marble, which is also one of the venues of the Jaipur Literature Festival this year. For those who are interested, there are heritage walks aplenty for attendees of the festival by seasoned local tour guides.

Dive into adventure

Wrap up your trip to the otherwise quaint city of Jaipur with the some adrenaline-pumping adventures that it has to offer. Zip through the wildlife with the famous jungle safaris or witness the mighty leopards, tigers and hyenas at the Ranthambore National Park. Experience the wilderness through camel safari, paraglide across the sparkling lakes or drift over the city in a hot air balloon.

From its tales of past valour to its vivacious present, there’s a lot that makes Jaipur unforgettable.
