MCD tests models for door to door garbage collection

Thursday, 31 December 2020 | PNS | Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is considering using three-wheeler vehicles with installed storage boxes to collect dry and wet garbage separately in residential colonies to make the door to door garbage collection efficient in the new 31 wards of Dehradun.

The MCD officials informed that a UP based company approached the corporation a few days back to use the vehicles that appear like electric rickshaws for the garbage collection in the wards but nothing has been confirmed by MCD yet. Informing further about it, one of the representatives of the company informed that they have built three types of prototype of such vehicles for the corporation which has the capacity to hold more than one quintal garbage and can easily cover long distances to collect the garbage.

He said that the municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey and some other officials have tested the vehicles and might soon give permission to operate.

However, the chief municipal health officer Dr Kailash Joshi said that he has recommended some changes in the vehicles since he is not satisfied with the current prototype. According to him, the corporation will consider using such vehicles in residential colonies for the collection of segregated garbage only if the improved prototypes will fit the standards set by the corporation.

It is noteworthy to mention here that the corporation is planning to commence door to door service in the new 31 wards possibly from the month of January.

Since most of the garbage collected from the old wards is unsegregated, the officials informed that the corporation is trying to ensure door to door service in new wards with proper segregation of waste.
