Lauding the Yogi Adityanath government for extending insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh to police personnel and Health department staff, Power Employees Joint Action Committee demanded similar favour for them.
It argued that power employees also worked in adverse and risky environment and they should also be given insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh.
Power Employees Joint Action Committee convenor Shailendra Dubey said on Wednesday that power employees at the time of coronavirus pandemic were vulnerable to risks and for maintaining their morale, they should also be given insurance cover.
Dubey said that like the police, health and sanitation employees, power employees were also working round-the-clock for maintaining power supply in the state by managing power generation, transmission and distribution.
The JAC leader said that on April 5, the appeal to people by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to switch off lights for 9 minutes caused a huge slump of over 31,000 MW in power demand. He said that despite the unprecedented drop in demand, power employees ensured smooth operation of the grid and uninterrupted power supply, which was a tough task.
On Wednesday, the UP government announced insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh for police personnel in the state. A formal order is likely to be issued soon.
Earlier, Punjab government had announced to provide additional health insurance of Rs 50 lakh to policemen and sanitation workers.
