The Creator, Sustainer and Destroyer

God’s role is to purify human souls by empowering them to destroy vice and to regain their original pristine state, says Rajyogi Brahmakumar Nikunj ji

Across the globe, every devout soul remembers God as the Creator and the one who protects and nurtures. Of the three divine acts of God — creation, sustenance and destruction — the last one needs to be understood in the right perspective. This is because, when devastating natural calamities like earthquakes, cyclones and tsunamis occur, many people term them as ‘acts of God’.  Similarly, some consider ‘death’ to be an ‘act of God’. In India people say God sends His death agent (Yama) to those whose time has come to depart the earthly life. If that is the case, then is God responsible for the death of other creatures like snakes, scorpions and insects as well? Then, some consider all events and phenomena on earth and in the universe as acts of God and hence they believe that not even a leaf can stir without His command. This belief that God inflicts such suffering on humans has led to many rituals in many cultures. For example- followers of some faith, perform animal sacrifices, feasts, sacrificial fires and make elaborate offerings to appease their gods and ward off calamities. This fear and image of God as an angry punishing authority has made humans more distanced from God. In this connection, there are many legends and stories such as Lord Shankar who is also called Mahadev opening his third eye through which flames of destruction come out and destroy the impure world. Similarly, in mythological stories, many gods and goddesses are shown in destructive roles. As they are believed to have incarnated to destroy evil forces and establish order and righteousness.

It is a well-known fact that God, Almighty, Bhagwan or by whatever name we know him, is universally acknowledged as a benefactor (kalyankari). So, HIS Divine role as the destroyer must be a benevolent and beneficent one isn’t it? It would be like that of a doctor removing malignant tumours or destroying harmful germs or bacteria to restore the health of his patients. Also, we know about a common practise of pulling down an old and dilapidated building that is beyond repair and rebuilding a new one. Aren’t the above examples as common as we see and experience them? Then, what is the reason to fear destruction? We must understand that in this eternal drama of life everything is cyclical — like day and night. Everything passes through three stages — beginning, middle and end. Every beginning has an end and every end leads to a new beginning. We call it creation, sustenance and destruction. In that sense, nothing is destroyed, it just changes form. It is renewed from old to new, just like a building is re-developed. This is how the eternal drama of life goes on and on.

When souls lose their purity after repeated birth and death and after getting afflicted by the five vices of lust, greed, anger, attachment and ego, nature also gets influenced by their vicious actions hence from its super excellent state, she gradually becomes utterly degraded. It is at this time when the Supreme Almighty himself comes to give wisdom and power to human souls and guide them back to their original super excellent stage. When human souls become pure, automatically nature will also be purified. Remember, evil destroys itself. It is said that at the time of destruction human intellect becomes perverted. Today human beings have created nuclear weapons. We are constantly being warned by environmentalists about global warming and its alarming effects. All this is happening due to the unrighteous thoughts and actions performed by humans. We blame God for everything, but in an actual sense, phenomena like natural calamities are not acts of God, but upheavals caused by imbalanced elements of nature. God’s role is to purify human souls by empowering them to destroy vices and to regain their original pristine state of being which is full of virtues. He liberates us and protects us from evil. He is the merciful and benevolent One who is guiding the entire humanity towards a new world of purity, peace and happiness. So instead of blaming Him, let us start listening to Him and following Him.
