MLAs not allowed to speak in Assembly: BJP

Saturday, 19 August 2023 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

The BJP on Friday lashed out at the ruling AAP dispensation claiming its members were not allowed to speak in the Delhi Assembly on the Dwarka Expressway issue and termed it as “murder of democracy.”

Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said the BJP legislators were not granted permission to speak despite being present during a discussion on the Dwarka Expressway in the CAG report.

Addressing a Press conference Bidhuri and other BJP MLAs said Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla acknowledged that along with Bidhuri, Mohan Singh Bisht would participate in the discussion on this matter.

All BJP legislators were present in the House during the discussion, but they were not allowed to speak. Bidhuri stated that expressing opposition through a walkout and participating in the discussion are rights of a member. Bidhuri said regarding the CAG report being discussed in the House, all BJP members wanted to dispel any misconceptions. In fact, the CAG report mentions a cost of Rs 250 crore per 1 km of road, which is not just a 1 km road but a 5,000 km long project that is being funded with Rs 91,000 crores. The road mentioned in the report is also an approximately 17 km-long elevated road.

It is the first time in India that an 8-lane elevated road is being constructed on a single pillar. The project for this road was awarded at Rs 5,269 crore which is estimated to be 12 per cent lower than the projected cost.

The project includes the construction of four-level interchanges for the first time.
