Do not underestimate power of common man: TMC to Modi

Thursday, 06 June 2024 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

Ahead of the crucial Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance meeting in Delhi a 29-seatstrong Trinamool Congress on Wednesday had a clear and loud message of the aspiring “king- makers” in Delhi. Party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee asked all and sundry to let the common man take control of the situation asking them not to underestimate the power of the common man.

While Mamata Banerjee had on Tuesday made her views clear saying she wanted to see the back of the Prime Minister anyway Abhishek Banerjee who is also her nephew continued in same veinsaying, beginning of the end of Modi era had begun. Before leaving for Delhi he iterated no one should forget that the common man was the real kingmaker and that it is the common man whowielded the ultimate power.

When asked whether his party would play the kingmaker in Delhi he said, “I must say the kingmaker is the general public and not any political leader. Those who voted against the price hike, BJP’s tyranny, communal and divisive politics — every poor and the common man who voted are the actual kingmakers”.

When asked whether the NDA would be able to form a government at the Centre, Banerjee said that the answer lay in the question adding “A month ago these conceited BJP leaders including Amit Shah ji who were flying down to Bengal on daily basis said ‘Give us 30 seats and Didi’s government will fall’. Now see the irony, the media is asking me if the NDA government willsurvive… the Prime Minister has to go to the NDA partners to save his government and return to power … so how so high you are it is once again proved that no one is higher than the people”

Then He quoted from a famous Bollywood film, “Never underestimate the power of a common man” aiming apparently at the saffron leadership.

Incidentally the Chief Minister had on Tuesday said that her party presently had two agenda: fist to see Modi go out of power and ensure the release of the funds from Delhi.

The TMC won 29 seats whereas the BJP was reduced to 12 down by six seats I comparison to its 2019 tally. Incidentally Banerjee himself won his Diamond Harbour seat by a record margin of 7.7 lakh votes leaving a frowning lot of critics to wonder whether democracy was in full play in Bengal.

On his representing his party in Delhi instead of Mamata Banerjee he said “the Chief Minister ad said that if an invitation came then I would go … an invitation has come and I am going.” “On future scheme of things he said “let the other leaders from the other parts of the country come and express their views … let a common view point emerge … then it would be right to speak.”
