In a significant move to promote voter participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024, Ananya Mittal, the District Election Officer, has issued a groundbreaking order granting paid leave to all voters on the day of polling. The directive, aimed at ensuring the inclusion of every eligible voter in the democratic process, extends to both government and private sector employees.

According to the order, dated [Insert Date], all employees, regardless of their employment sector, will be entitled to paid leave on the polling day, scheduled for 25th May in East Singhbhum district. Importantly, the order stipulates that no deductions will be made from the salaries of employees availing of this leave, in compliance with Section 135 (b) of the Representation of the People Act 1951.

Key highlights of the order include:Universal Paid Leave: Every eligible voter, whether employed in government, private businesses, industries, malls, or any other establishments, will be granted leave on the day of polling.

Non-Deduction of Wages: Employers are mandated not to deduct or reduce the wages of employees availing of this leave, ensuring that exercising their voting rights does not entail any financial repercussions.

Closure of Institutions: All institutions, shops, malls, and establishments in Purbi Singhbhum district will remain closed on 25 May 2024, in observance of the polling day for the Lok Sabha Election-2024.

Inclusion of Daily Wage Workers: Even workers employed on daily wages and casual laborers are entitled to leave and wages on the polling day, ensuring their participation in the electoral process.

Exceptions: The order exempts voters whose absence may pose a risk of danger or public loss in relation to their employment engagements from availing of the mandated leave.

Ananya Mittal has further directed key authorities, including the Deputy Labor Commissioner, Deputy Chief Factory Inspector, Assistant Deputy Labor Commissioner, Assistant Director of Employment Office, and all Labor Superintendents, to oversee the strict implementation of the order. Any violation of the directive will be subject to legal repercussions as per the relevant sections of the law.

This proactive initiative by the District Election Officer underscores a commitment to fostering a robust democratic ethos by ensuring unfettered access to the voting process for all citizens. It serves as a commendable example of inclusive governance and underscores the importance of citizen engagement in shaping the democratic landscape.
