Gurmeet Ram Rahim gets 50-day parole

Chandigarh:  Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was granted a 50-day parole on Friday. He has been serving a 20-year jail term at Sunaria jail in Rohtak on rape charges. He secured another parole on Friday just 29 days after he walked back into Sunaria jail after spending 21 days out on a furlough.  During his parole, Ram Rahim will stay at an ashram in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat. On November 21, 2023, he walked out of the jail in Rohtak on a 21-day furlough. He walked back to the jail last month. After spending just 29 days in jail, he got another reprieve. In 2023, he came out of the jail thrice. In November, he stayed at Dera Sacha Sauda Ashram in Barnawa in Baghpat.  In 2023, he spent nearly three months out of prison. He got a 30-day parole in July. In January last year, he got a 40-day parole. In October 2022, he was granted a 40-day parole. Prior to his October parole, he had come out of the prison on a month-long parole in June 2022. Besides, he was granted a three weeks' furlough from February 7, 2022. In 2021, Gurmeet Ram Rahim and four others were convicted for conspiring to kill Dera manager Ranjit Singh. In 2019, he was convicted for murdering a journalist 16 years ago.

Punjab CM expresses profound grief over Agniveer Jawan’s martyrdom

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday expressed profound grief and sorrow over the martyrdom of 23 years old Army Jawan Ajay Singh, who attained martyrdom while performing his duty. Agniveer Ajay Singh, who hailed from Ramgarh Sardaran village near Khanna, attained martyrdom in a landmine blast. “Brave jawan laid his life while performing duty at Jammu and Kashmir. It is an irreparable loss for the country in general and for the distressed family in particular,” he said, adding that monetary assistance will be extended to the family according to the State Government’s policy.

 Chandigarh Smart City wins Best Solid Waste Management Practice Award

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Smart City on Friday received recognition for Best Solid Waste Management Practices and provision of SCADA for Solid Waste Management at ninth Smart Cities India Expo. The award was received by Anisha Shrivastav, Additional Chief Executive Officer, Chandigarh Smart City Limited, during the Smart Cities India Award Ceremony at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Speaking about the performance of Chandigarh Smart City, Anindita Mitra, CEO said "State-of-the-art Garbage Transfer Stations and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) at three locations in the city ensure efficient and segregated handling of municipal waste. These facilities reduce waste volume by recovering reusable and recyclable materials, leading to an annual fuel saving of approximately Rs 1.6 crore. Revenue is being generated by selling the recyclable waste, she added.

National Voters' Day to be celebrated in Hry on Jan 25

Chandigarh: National Voters' Day will be celebrated in Haryana on January 25. Competitions such as debates, discussions, drawings, skits, songs, paintings, essays, etc., will be organized in all schools and educational institutions under the theme "Nothing like voting, I vote for sure." In a circular addressed to Administrative Secretaries of all departments, Heads of Departments, Managing Directors of Boards, Corporations, Deputy Commissioners, Vice-Chancellors, and Registrars of all Universities, Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal directed that all staff under their control should take the NVD pledge. Kaushal mentioned that the Election Commission of India has declared its foundation day as National Voter Day. This day is celebrated every year on January 25 across the country, from the polling station level to the block, assembly constituency, district, and state levels.

PPCC chief distributes parshad in Gidderbaha

Chandigarh: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, spreading happiness among the residents of his constituency Gidderbaha, distributed sweets and diyas, ahead of the grand ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony for the inauguration of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Warring visited various neighborhoods in Gidderbaha, sharing joy with the locals with the sole aim of fostering unity and spreading the spirit of brotherhood as the nation gears up for the inauguration of the Ram Mandir.

Clay lamps distributed to sanitation workers

Chandigarh: Ahead of the Ram Pran Pratishtha to be held on January 22 in Ayodhya Dham, Society for Divine Reiki Meditation and Resident Welfare Association Sector 27-D jointly distributed clay lamps to the sanitation workers for Ram Deepotsav, and resolved to celebrate Deepotsav in their homes. Program coordinator and Society secretary Mehak Singh on Friday said that in Shri Ram’s kingdom, there was a system based on social equality and justice in which every class had the right to live a life with religious respect. Taking inspiration from Shri Ram, we should take a pledge to eliminate social evils from the society and country.

Over 50 women journos participated in cancer awareness session

Chandigarh: Fortis Hospital Mohali, in collaboration with Chandigarh Press Club, Sector 27, held a special session on breast cancer and cervical cancer awareness for more than 50 women members at the club premises on Friday. The session was organized in view of January being Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and upcoming World Cancer Day on February 4, 2024. The workshop was conducted by Dr Naval Bansal, Consultant Endocrine and Breast Surgeon, Fortis Hospital Mohali and Dr Shweta Tahlan, Consultant Gynaec Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon.

Approval of 32 roads to improve traffic in Bawal: Minister

Chandigarh: Haryana Cooperation and Public Health Engineering Minister Banwari Lal said on Friday that the government has approved the strengthening and improvement of 32 roads in the Bawal region to provide better transportation facilities for the people. The estimated cost for the construction and improvement of these roads is around Rs. 30.31 crores. Lal stated that the government is focused on improving and strengthening the road infrastructure in the state and even efforts are made to connect each district to the national highways. Additionally, communications routes have been expanded for farmers to bring their produce to the markets. Many roads have been constructed in the Bawal region for these purposes, and funds have been allocated for the remaining roads. The construction work of these roads will commence soon, he added.

Seminar on Promoting Safety and Health Awareness in Factories and Establishments in Hry

Chandigarh: Haryana Labour Department organized a seminar on 'Creating Awareness on Safety and Health in Factories and Establishments' in Gurugram. An exhibition displaying the latest security equipment was also organized in which various management employees and factory owners were also present in large numbers. The Seminar was driven by the theme "The Best Investment is Investment in Health and Safety"  in his address, Rajeev Ranjan, Principal Secretary to the Government of Haryana, Labour Department motivated all the industry owners and Management to make Safety and Health of their workers first priority and highlighted that investing in health and safety not only safeguards employees but also enhances overall business efficiency and productivity of the workers.
