Goods train travels 80 km between Kathua and Hoshiarpur without a driver; Probe initiated

Monday, 26 February 2024 | PNS | Chandigarh/Hoshiarpur

In an extraordinary turn of events, a fully loaded goods train embarked on a driverless journey from Kathua railway station in Jammu and Kashmir, covering a distance of nearly 80 kilometers before being brought to a halt in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur. The incident has triggered a thorough investigation by railway authorities to unravel the mystery behind the train's autonomous movement.

The goods train, consisting of 53 bogies, was stationed at Kathua railway station, awaiting clearance to proceed towards Punjab. However, at approximately 7:05 am, to the astonishment of onlookers and railway staff, the train began to roll downhill towards Punjab, attaining speeds ranging from 60 to 70 kilometers per hour. Remarkably, there was no driver present onboard, leaving observers bewildered.

Preliminary speculation suggested that the individual operating the train may have neglected to engage the brakes before vacating the cabin, resulting in the train’s unintended movement. The track’s slope towards the Pathankot side facilitated the train’s journey, further complicating the situation.

Railway personnel at Ucchi Bassi railway station took swift action and managed to halt the train around 8 am, utilizing wooden blocks on the tracks to gradually reduce its speed. Fortunately, no damage or casualties were reported as a result of the incident, averting a potential disaster.

The Railways wasted no time in launching an inquiry into the matter, with the primary objective of determining the root cause of this unprecedented occurrence. The investigation, which commenced promptly, aims to scrutinize various factors contributing to the train's autonomous journey.

Initial reports indicate that the goods train had halted at Kathua railway station for a scheduled driver change, suggesting that the incident may have been triggered by a lapse in standard operating procedures. Both the loco pilot and assistant loco pilot were conspicuously absent from the train during its peculiar journey.

Loaded with chip stones, the freight train was en route to Punjab from Jammu when the incident transpired. Railway authorities have assured that no damage to property occurred during the train’s unmanned voyage and that precautionary measures were swiftly implemented to prevent any potential accidents.

In response to the incident, the Ferozepur railway division officials have been mobilized to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter. Railway authorities have emphasized that suitable action will be taken following the conclusion of the investigation, underscoring their commitment to ensuring the safety and integrity of railway operations.
