In a heartfelt announcement on Monday, Saurabh Tiwary, the prominent left-handed cricketer hailing from Jamshedpur, declared his retirement from all forms of cricket. Tiwary, who proudly donned the Indian colours and played a pivotal role in Jharkhand's cricket legacy, revealed that his final match will be during the upcoming Ranji Trophy clash between Jharkhand and Rajasthan at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur, scheduled from February 16 to 19, 2024.
Addressing the media at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) office, Tiwary, who has dedicated 17 years to the Jharkhand Ranji team, expressed his desire for young cricketers to step up and showcase their talent. "I believe it's the opportune moment to retire, allowing the younger generation to take the mantle and bring pride to the nation," he remarked.
Reflecting on his illustrious journey, Tiwary stated that he leaves the game with no regrets, having consistently given his best in every match. Expressing gratitude, he acknowledged the pivotal role played by his father and coach Kajal Das in shaping his cricketing career.
“I have enjoyed every moment in my career. All the occasions were special to me. However, the best moment that remained in my heart was when I scored a century against Tripura. Out of sheer happiness my father lifted me in his arms and kissed me. Moreover, every time I scored a century my dad used to kiss me,” said the swashbuckling southpaw.
Tiwary, who initiated his Ranji career in 2006, leaves behind an impressive legacy, accumulating 7872 runs in first-class cricket for Bihar-Jharkhand. Remarkably, this places him ahead of cricket icon Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the list of highest run-scorers for the region. With 21 centuries in 184 innings and a highest score of 238, Tiwary has left an indelible mark on the domestic cricket circuit. His international stint included three ODIs for Team India, where he contributed with 49 runs.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Tiwary showcased his prowess in 93 matches, amassing 1494 runs, including eight half-centuries. The cricketer, who commenced his cricketing journey in Jamshedpur playing for the Under-14 team, gained recognition on the global stage as a part of the victorious Indian Under-19 team in the 2008 ICC Under-19 World Cup, captained by Virat Kohli.
Notably, Tiwary's IPL journey began with the Mumbai Indians in the inaugural season, and in 2011, he was signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for a significant sum of 7.36 crore INR.
He also appreciated the role being played by IPL to nurture young talent. He said that the IPL is the best platform to perform.
As he bids farewell to the cricketing arena, Saurabh Tiwary also highlighted the need for enhanced cricket infrastructure in Jharkhand. His advocacy for improved facilities aims to nurture and support the budding talents in the state, ensuring a bright future for Jharkhand cricket.
