2 CTG commandos seriously injured in accidental detonator blast

Friday, 16 May 2025 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

Two commandos from the elite Counter Terrorism Group (CTG) were grievously injured when a detonator accidentally exploded during a routine mock drill at the 25th SAF Battalion premises in Bhopal on Thursday. The incident has raised concerns over safety protocols during such high-risk exercises. One commando, Vishal Singh, is reported to be in critical condition, while his colleague, Santosh Kumar, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The injured personnel belong to the Anti-Terrorism Squad’s Hawk Force, a specialized unit trained for counter-terror operations. They were conducting an operational preparedness drill designed to simulate real-life counter-terror scenarios when the explosion occurred unexpectedly. The blast caused immediate panic and confusion at the training site, with fellow officers rushing to provide aid and evacuate the injured commandos to hospital.

Madhya Pradesh ATS Inspector General Dr. Ashish confirmed the accident, describing it as an unfortunate incident during a scheduled exercise held every two weeks. “The explosion happened when a detonator accidentally went off during a mock drill. We have constituted a high-level enquiry to investigate the exact cause and whether any lapses in safety procedures occurred,” he said.

Initial reports had speculated that the explosion might have been caused by a grenade blast, but Dr. Ashish clarified that it was a detonator. He explained that had it been a grenade, the outcome would likely have been fatal for both commandos. He reassured that the force strictly follows safety protocols and that the use of live explosives and ammunition during such drills is carefully controlled and limited.

The CTG commandos are highly skilled personnel, considered on par with National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, and form the first line of defense during terror-related emergencies. Dr. Ashish highlighted the professionalism and training of these officers, emphasizing that despite the accident, their capabilities remain robust.

The State Police Headquarters has formed a high-level enquiry committee tasked with a detailed investigation into the incident. The committee will review the safety measures, equipment handling procedures, and operational protocols followed during the drill to prevent future mishaps. The police have also pledged to enhance safety training and equipment inspections to safeguard personnel involved in such exercises.

This incident has once again spotlighted the inherent risks faced by security forces during training and the critical importance of stringent safety regulations. Officials have called for greater vigilance and continuous review of protocols to ensure that preparedness drills do not compromise the safety of personnel.

Local communities and security experts have expressed sympathy for the injured commandos and called for comprehensive measures to avoid similar accidents. The successful handling of this enquiry and subsequent actions will be closely watched as the government aims to maintain the highest standards of operational readiness while prioritizing the welfare of its security forces.
