In a worrying trend that threatens to derail railway punctuality and safety, the Chakradharpur Railway Division has witnessed a surge in cases of alarm chain misuse, with 124 reported incidents in just two months. According to official data, 68 cases were recorded in April, followed by 56 in May, triggering a flurry of arrests and legal action by the railway authorities.
A total of 63 people were arrested in April and 49 in May for unlawfully pulling the alarm chain—an emergency tool meant strictly for life-threatening or critical situations onboard trains. Railway officials warn that such irresponsible behavior is not only illegal but also dangerous, as it jeopardizes the safety of passengers and causes massive disruption to railway operations.
“This is not a harmless act,†said a senior railway official. “Pulling the alarm chain without a valid reason can cause delays across the network, creating a ripple effect that affects thousands of commuters.â€
Unscheduled halts due to alarm chain pulling delay the train involved and hamper the timing of several other trains along the same route. The impact doesn’t stop there—overcrowded stations, stressed railway staff, and disrupted passenger plans are just some of the fallout from these seemingly minor acts.
The misuse of the emergency chain also undermines genuine emergencies, where the chain could be a lifeline. Authorities have emphasized that pulling the chain without justification is a punishable offence under Section 141 of the Indian Railways Act, and more stringent action is on the cards if the trend continues.
Passengers are being urged to exercise restraint and responsibility. The railways plan to ramp up awareness campaigns, including announcements at stations and posters inside coaches, to reinforce the importance of using the alarm chain only in real emergencies.
“Each passenger must understand their role in keeping the railway system smooth and safe,†added the official. “A single act of carelessness can cause delays for hundreds and tarnish the experience for everyone.â€
As summer travel peaks and train occupancy surges, officials hope that a mix of awareness and enforcement will help curb the menace and restore punctuality and order on the tracks.
