Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has issued stern directives for the high-quality and timely completion of metro rail projects across Madhya Pradesh, placing particular emphasis on accelerating the Bhopal and Indore metro systems. During a comprehensive review of the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Projects on Friday at Samatva Bhavan, the Chief Minister underscored the necessity for seamless coordination among all departments, including Public Works and related agencies, to prevent any implementation bottlenecks.
The Bhopal Metro Rail Project, approved in November 2018, boasts a total length of approximately 30 kilometers across two lines with 30 stations, including two underground stations. The estimated cost for this ambitious project stands at Rs 10,033 crore. Plans include the initial operation of 27 trains, each comprising three coaches, with the flexibility to expand to six-coach trains in the future as demand dictates. The Orange Line is slated to run from Karond Chauraha to AIIMS, Saket Nagar, while the Blue Line will connect Bhadbhada Chauraha to Ratnagiri Tiraha. The main metro depot will be established at Subhash Nagar.
Progress on the Bhopal Metro is phased, with the first segment—from Pul Bogda to AIIMS (7 km, 8 stations)—targeted for completion by August 2025. The second phase, covering Karond Chauraha to Pul Bogda (9 km, 6 stations), will feature two underground stations and is scheduled for completion by June 2028. The third phase, spanning Bhadbhada Chauraha to Ratnagiri Tiraha (14.16 km), will include 14 elevated stations, also slated for completion by June 2028. Pul Bogda is designated as the crucial interchange station for both the Orange and Blue Lines. Earlier, a significant milestone was achieved with metro testing conducted between Subhash Nagar and Rani Kamalapati Station in October 2023.
Approved concurrently with the Bhopal project in November 2018, the Indore Metro Project spans over 31 kilometers with 28 stations, seven of which will be underground. Initially, three-coach trains are operational, with future plans to operate up to 25 trains, expandable to six coaches as required.
The estimated cost for the Indore project is Rs 12,088 crore. Key stations along the Yellow Line include Gandhi Nagar, ISBT, Vijay Nagar Chauraha, Patrakar Colony, Railway Station, Rajwada, Bada Ganpati, and the Airport. The metro depot for Indore is located at Gandhi Nagar.
Indore has already seen a significant portion of its first phase come to fruition, with Phase 1 (Reach 1) from Gandhi Nagar to Super Corridor 3 (6.3 km, 5 stations) now operational. This segment was notably inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 31, 2025. Phase 1 (Reach 2), extending from Super Corridor to Malviya Nagar Chauraha (approximately 11 km, 11 stations), is targeted for completion by October 2025. Phase 2, from Malviya Nagar Chauraha to Palasia Chauraha (5.34 km, 5 elevated stations), is scheduled for completion by December 2027. The final Phase 3, an 8.70 km underground section with 7 underground stations connecting Palasia Chauraha to Gandhi Nagar, is targeted for completion by December 2028.
Statewide Mobility Plans Under Review
During the review meeting, updates were also presented on the Comprehensive Mobility Plans (CMP) and Alternative Analysis Reports (AAR) for other major cities: Gwalior, Ujjain, and Jabalpur, in addition to Bhopal and Indore.
