Tuesday, 11 February 2025 | PNS | Ranchi

Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar has called upon scientists to work with more dedication and commitment to make agriculture profitable and to spend more time in the farmers' fields by coming out of the laboratory. He said that only when the farmers are happy, our State and Country will be happy.

The Governor was addressing the closing ceremony of the three-day Agrotech Kisan Mela 2025 organized at Birsa Agricultural University on Monday. He said that most of the farmers of South India are taking three crops in a year, while the majority of farmers of Jharkhand are able to take only one crop in a year. "The farmers here are very hardworking, no less than the farmers of any other state. There is a need to provide them necessary guidance, incentives and facilities. Farmers should be encouraged to do natural farming for the sustainable health of the soil. Some villages should be adopted and developed as model villages, so that the surrounding villages get inspired," he said.

Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato said that farmers are leaving farming due to very low profits. To keep them in this profession, along with making agriculture profitable, farmers need to be given proper social identity, respect, reward and dignity, he said.

On the occasion, Kanke MLA Suresh Baitha urged the Agriculture Department to make rules for regular appointment of casual labourers of BAU and to develop lift irrigation facility in Potpoto and Jumar rivers of Kanke.

Agriculture Secretary Abubakar Siddiqui said that Jharkhand has a lot of potential in horticultural crops including pulses, millets, flower production, fish production and animal husbandry. "Efforts will have to be made to provide quality products on time as per the demand of the organized market. As soon as the new chairman of JPSC is appointed, efforts will be made to fill the vacant posts of BAU soon," he said.

In his address, Vice Chancellor of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Dr. Tapan Kumar Shandilya emphasized on serious efforts towards implementing the slogans of Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan as well as Jai Vigyan and Jai Anusandhan.

Delivering the welcome address, BAU Vice Chancellor Dr SC Dubey discussed the activities and achievements of the university and said that 3000 farmers had registered to participate in the fair and a total of about 15 thousand people participated. "More than a thousand entries were received in the horticulture exhibition, out of which 208 people were awarded. 154 people participated in the animal exhibition, out of which 43 people were awarded. He said that 100% posts of officials, 80% of teachers-scientists, 70% of Krishi Vigyan Kendras and 60% of non-teaching staff in the university are lying vacant for years due to which the functioning of the institution is getting affected," he said.

On this occasion, out of six farmers of the state for advanced agriculture and animal husbandry, Shivnath and Ganesh Ram from Meral, Garhwa, Basant Kumar Ravi and Sangeeta Devi from Ramgarh, Mary Soren from Sundat Pahari, Godda, Naresh Kumar Mahato from Dhanbad and two winners of the horticulture exhibition - Nilesh of Raj Bhavan Garden and Ajit of ITBP were honored.

Director of Extension Education of BAU, Dr. Jagarnath Oraon gave the vote of thanks and Shashi Singh conducted the function.
