24x7 control centre to monitor traffic in G’gram

Friday, 23 November 2018 | Pravesh Sharma | Gurugram

Soon the city’s traffic movement will be monitored by an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) which is being set up by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).

The authority has also decided to take over the city’s all traffic signals from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG).

Shortage of traffic police personnel and an increasing number of vehicles in the city often results in heavy traffic snarls at all major crossings during peak hours every day. To avoid such  traffic hold ups, the GMDA will install smart traffic signals at various crossings. As of now, the city has 80 old traffic signals and the same are being replaced by smart traffic signals. These signals will be connected 24x7 to Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) of the GMDA.

This will monitor traffic conditions and control vehicle flow. It will also coordinate with relevant departments, a senior GMDA official said.

The Integrated command and control centre, will be the nodal point of availability of all online and information related to smart applications.

The command center will be established with all hardware, software and network infrastructures, the official added. The development authority has started installing CCTV cameras. It expects that in a year, it will set up optical fibre backbone network within the GMDA boundaries. The system intends to control traffic by forewarning drivers and changing signals according to the traffic volume, he added.

“Additional, LED screens will be installed at a distance of about 400 metres from each crossing to avoid bumper-to-bumper traffic. Infrared camera sensors with WiFi connections will be installed with the streetlights, which will relay live traffic information to control rooms,” a official said, adding that based on data gathered by the sensors, these boards will flash information on the traffic situation further ahead on route, to help commuters take spot decisions.
