Psycho’s bid for attention fails, held for threat to CM’s daughter

A 22 year-old man preparing for the competitive examination has been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly sending an email last week to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s office threatening to kidnap the AAP leader’s daughter. The man wanted to draw the attention of a high-profile person in order to get better treatment for his psychiatric issues, police said.

The man identified as Vikas Rai was arrested from Rae Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.

“After sending the e-mail, Rai had left for his sister’s place in Rae Bareilly. The police traced him and asked him to join the investigation. He was arrested on Tuesday after the police took permission from the court since the FIR was registered for non-cognisable offences,” said a senior police official.

The accused, who was undergoing treatment for psychiatric issues at the Safdarjung Hospital here and was declared fit, felt he needed better treatment facilities, said the police officer.

In order to draw the attention of a high-profile person to the issue, he had sent the e-mail to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), allegedly threatening to abduct his daughter, police said.

“Vikas has been living in Delhi for the last one-and-a-half years and is preparing for the competitive examination,” said the official.

The senior police official said the accused hails from Samastipur in Bihar and is pursuing graduation in B.Sc through correspondence from a university in Bihar.

The Chief Minister’s office received email last Wednesday, in which the anonymous sender had threatened to kidnap and harm Kejriwal’s daughter, Harshita. “In the email, the unknown sender has claimed that they will harm the Chief Minister’s daughter and have challenged him to do whatever he can do to protect her,” a senior officer had said.
