Colonel Mohit Thapa of Dehradun has been selected by the Indian army to lead a 23 member team for its first ever expedition of the challenging peak of Mount Kun (7077 mts) located in Ladhak region.
Mount Kun is the second highest peak in the Zanskar Range and is part of the twin summit in the mountain massif Nun-Kun, located in Suru Valley in the rugged landscape of Zanskar. It is acknowledged as a formidable test of technical expertise and endurance.
The expedition was flagged off Lieutenant General YK Joshi, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Fire and Fury Corps flagged off the expedition on July 30. The 23 member team comprises of 15 officers including 10 women officers, one Junior Commission Officer and seven Other Ranks (OR). Lieutenant General Y K Joshi interacted with the team members and wished them fair weather and a successful summit. As per the plan the team will attempt to summit Mt Kun on 12 August 2019 as per plans.
The mountaineering expedition to the challenging peak is being undertaken under the aegis of Army Adventure Wing.
An army communiqué says that the expedition is the first Indian Army expedition to Mt Kun which includes women officers. Comprising of experienced mountaineers, the team underwent rigorous training at the Army Mountaineering Institute at Siachen Base Camp, as part of their preparation for the expedition.
