J’khand filmmaker gets international acknowledgment

Monday, 08 July 2019 | Divya Modi | Ranchi

Filmmaker, painter, poet, writer and social worker, 30-year-old Ankur Chakravorty is a multifaceted man. Born in Ranchi, Chakravorty has established himself as a renowned filmmaker of Jharkhand and is primarily involved in making short films in English and documentaries.

His film ‘Duet’, released in 2017, is a short film in Hindi which got the Cult Critic Movie Awards 2018, California, USA. Another film of his, ‘Juliet- ditched’ (2012) got the best film award at the Tata Steel Super Shorts 2015, Jamshedpur. Also, Siesta (2017), Nest (2017) and Step into my Shoes (2017) are some of the other movies made by Chakravorty which have been selected for the Calcutta Cult International Film Festival.

The young film maker is of the opinion that everyone has a story to tell and it is basically about how the stories are told. “I am obsessed with characters in the human world. I have always wanted to do films on ‘him and her’. This ‘him and her’ constitutes the entire union and this union is the base for everything we see around us,” he affirmed.

“All my films are about a closed world where the people keep themselves aloof from the outside world. The characters are seen dealing with human relationships between two people- a man and a woman,” said the vibrant film maker. His films are available on YouTube and FilmFreeway.

A graduate in mass communication and film making, Chakravorty also holds a post graduate diploma in human resource management and a masters’ in English literature. He did his schooling from G&H High School.

“I have been involved in film making since 2010 but this is not what I had planned in life, film making just happened by chance. I always wanted to work for a news channel or a media house. Meghnath, a national award filmmaker is my mentor and the reason why I got into this line,” recalls Chakravorty.

The vivacious story teller strongly feels that a parent’s support in their child’s success can never be quantified.

He believes that whatever he has achieved in life is because of the unconditional support he has received from his family. “My family has never been very vocal about my achievements but has always guided me to choose the right path.

They are also my biggest critics to analyse my work samples and do so with brutal honesty,” acknowledged Chakravorty.

Apart from making short films and documentaries Chakravorty, has also started an NGO called ‘A Parallel Society’ in 2012. The NGO aims to promote English language among the children in rural areas and is also working towards making art film and allied activities.

Apart from being involved in film making and running an NGO, Chakravorty is also the head of marketing and corporate communications in a reputed healthcare company in the city.
