We must work seriously to curb suicide rate: Kulkarni

In a bid to minimize cases of suicidal deaths in the State, Health Department of Government of Jharkhand observed World Mental Health Day on Thursday.  Addressing as a chief guest in a programme organised on the occasion, Health Secretary, Nitin Madan Kulkarni said a large numbers of people commits suicide every year in India whereas suicide rate is highest in Jamshedpur in the State and there is need to minimize it.  Kulkarni added that at present people have to pay attention on Mental Health issues.

“Such kinds of cases are increasing due to fewer social commitments. We have to practice to share our inner thoughts with other people.  We can’t imagine that some people have such kinds of problems which are not important for us.  Psychological Counseling is a therapy of mental health but when people visit to Psychologist then they feel that there is something wrong in their mental health. We have to leave such kinds of thoughts,” said Kulkarni. The Secretary suggested that there should be a regular programme at school level to increase awareness among students about the mental health, which will be effective to minimize cases of suicide in the State and the Country. “The teachers and the students should regularly hold discussion on the issue so that new things could be explored. The teachers should motivate students to share their inner feelings,” he added.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, National Health Mission Director, Shailesh Kumar Chourasia said, “We are working at office, till evening it is not necessary that we feel physically tired but often we feel mentally tired after completion of work at evening. A wellness health reform programme have been started to minimize mental problems during work of employees.”The Director opined on the occasion that such kinds of cases are increasing due to termination of joint family system in the society.

Awareness should be increased among people about increasing of such kinds of cases in the society, he added.

In the beginning of the programme the State Nodal Officer LR Pathak informed about the programme in detail, Ajay Bakhla informed in detail on the issue of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Problem where as RN Singh informed about Suicide overview and Role of Media.
