The Nizami touch

A team of seven designers took eight months to curate each piece of the handcrafted and gold-studded jewellery worn by the three actresses in Kalank. By Team Viva

The Indian film industry never shies away from amping up the glamour quotient. And when there is a historical

set-up that is all set to light up the large canvas, the film makers give in to opulence. Whether it was Jodha Akbar, Manikarnika, Bajirao Mastani, this was all too evident. And joining this list is the multistarrer, Kalank, which is a saga set in the colonial era and dives deep into the pages of the history that were lit up by the era of kings and the queens. TBZ — The Original has curated the jewellery collection, titled Collection K, worn by actresses Alia Bhatt, Madhuri Dixit Nene and Sonakshi Sinha in the film. The designs, they say, “are an ode to the unforgettable era of the Nizams and Begums of Hyderabad in the pre-independence era.”

Binaisha Zaveri, director of the jewellery brand, says, “We wanted to create an exquisite collection that looked flawless against the backdrop and exuded magnificence. We researched our design archives that date back to 1864 to craft and launch the collection that pays homage to our treasured Indian heritage by blending age-old art forms.”

Crafted by a team of seven designers, she says, it took “eight months to finally bring each masterpiece in the collection to life. Around 50 craftsmen devoted their time by infusing the cutting-edge technology with indigenous art forms.”

She adds, “The designing team has pushed the boundaries of for this collection, curating it to perfection and making it synonymous with finesse.”

The ensemble of ornaments include the opulent 5 Lehra Haar in a collection of rich kundan and pearl carving, vintage choker sets with pearls and rubies embedded, Haathphools, Naths (nose rings) and Passas, hand-engraved Navratna, ornate Chandbalis, Bikaneri Meena and Kundan with pearl carvings. She says that the most “exotic and mesmerizing range” included the Polki and Jadau necklaces, bangles, chokers, maathapattis, borlas and armlets, which have been “intricately carved with gold and gem stones. Their price range starts from Rs 45,000.”

Since the background dates back to the princely traditions, how have the designers kept the modernity of these designs intact? Zaveri says, “To make each character’s look distinct from each other and keep the contemporary as well as the traditional elements in place, we revived indigenous art forms in our jewellery designed for the three actresses. Our goal was to create jewellery that gives the look-and-feel of a bygone era.”
