123 die, 2,933 test positive in Maha

Maharashtra achieved yet another dubious feat on Thursday, as a record 123 people succumbed to coronavirus and 2,933 others tested positive for the pandemic, taking the total number of deaths to 2,710 and infected cases in the State to 77,793.

A day after 122 people died of Covid-19, the state surpassed its earlier day’s highest tally and registered a record 123 deaths on Thursday.

Of the deaths,  Mumbai accounted for 48 deaths, while there were 21 deaths in Jalgaon, nine deaths in Pune, eight deaths in Thane, seven deaths in Solapur, sixx deaths in Navi Mumbai, five deaths in Aurangabad, three deaths each in Raigad and Nashik, two deaths in Kolhapur, Washim and Parbhani, one death each in Vasai-Virar, Palghar, Panvel, Dhule, Jalna, Latur, Osmnabad, Nanded and Yavatmal.

There have been a total of 939 deaths in Maharashtra during the previous ten days. On May 26 (Tuesday) the state had witnessed 97 deaths, while there were 105 deaths on May 27, 85 deaths on May 28, 116 deaths on May 29 and 99 deaths on May 30, 89 deaths on May 31, 76 on June 1, 103 on June 2, 122 on June 3 and 123 on June 4.

With 2933 fresh positive cases reported from across the state, the total of number of infected cases in the state went up to 77,793. With 2710 deaths and 33,681 others discharged from the hospitals, the health authorities said that the total number of “active cases” in the state was currently 41,393.

Of the dead,  85 were men while 38 were women. Seventy one of them were aged over 60 years, 44 were from the age group 40 to 59 years and 8 were aged below 40 years. “Ninety two out of 123 patients (75%) had high-risk co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease,” a state health bulletin said.

Out of the total deaths reported on Thursday 30 deaths occurred in the last two days and the rest are from the period April 30 to June 1.

With 48 new deaths and 1442 fresh infections, the total number of deaths in Mumbai mounted to 1465, while the infected cases rose to staggering 44931. The authorities pegged the number of “active cases” in Mumbai at 25364.   

Some key observations made in Thursday’s health bulletin were: The recovery rate in the state is 43.29 per cent.  Case fatality rate in the state is 3.48 per cent.

Currently, 5,60,303 people are in home quarantine. There are 73,049 beds available in quarantine institutions, while 30,623 people are in institutional quarantine now

There are total 83 laboratories functional in the state for COVID-19 diagnosis – 46 government ones and 37 private ones.

Out of 5,10,176 samples sent to various laboratories so far, 77,793 have tested positive for COVID-19 until Thursday.

There are 3804 active containment zones in the state currently. Total 19,132 surveillance squads worked across the state on Thursday and surveillance of 72.37 lakh people have been done so far.
