In what came as a huge relief to the state health authorities, the Covid 19-triggered deaths dropped to 125 and the inflections plummeted to 5,984 in Maharashtra on Monday, even as the total number of infections in the state crossed a grim 16 lakh milestone.
A day after the state logged 150 deaths, the Covid-19 curve appeared to be flattening, as the deaths came down to as low as 125 and infections dropped to a low of 5984. Both the fatalities and infections recorded on Monday were the lowest during the last four months.
With 125 fresh deaths, the total number of deaths mounted from 42,115 to 42,240.
Similarly, with 5984 fresh infections, the total number of infections breached the 16 lakh-mark as the total cases increased from from 15,95,381 to 16,013,65.
Of the total 125 deaths reported on Monday, Mumbai accounted for a maximum of 43 deaths, followed by 15 in Pune and 14 in Thane.
In the lower range, there were seven deaths in in Solapur, 6 each in Amravati and Nagpur, 5 in Jalna, 4 each in Ahmednagar, Sangli and Nanded, 3 in Kolhapur, 2 each in Raigad, Nashik and Satara and one death each in Palghar, Jalgaon, Ratnagiri, Aurangabad, Akola, Yavatmal, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.
With 43 deaths, the Covid-19 toll in Mumbai rose from 9,785 to 9,819 while the infected cases went up by 1,234 to trigger a jump in the total number of infections in the metropolis from 241,935 to 2,43,169.
On a day when 15,069 people were discharged from various hospitals in the state, the number of people discharged from various hospitals after full recovery since the second week of March this year went up to 13,84,879. The recovery rate in the state rose from 85.86 per cent to 86.48 per cent.
Meanwhile, the mortality rate in the state stood at 2.64 per cent. The number of “active cases” in the state dropped from 1,82,973 to 1,73,759.
Pune district, which continued to be the worst-affected city-district in Maharashtra, saw the total number of cases increase from 3,23,642 to 3,24,267, while the total number of deaths in Pune increased to 6503.
Thane district remained in the third spot --after Pune and Mumbai – after the total number of infections from 2,12,765 to 2,13,700, while the pandemic toll rose from to 5,211.
Out of 81,85,778 samples sent to laboratories, 16,01,365 have tested positive (19.56 per cent) for COVID-19 until Monday.
Currently, 24,14,577 people are in home quarantine while 23,285 people are in institutional quarantine.
