BJP walks out over paddy issue

Thursday, 25 February 2021 | Staff Reporter | RAIPUR

BJP members walked out of the Chhattisgarh Assembly on Wednesday over the issue of paddy procurement, saying they were not satisfied with the answers from the Food and Civil Supplies Minister.

Raising the issue through a call attention motion, BJP's Brijmohan Agrawal said the state government has not procured the total paddy as promised to the farmers. There was reduction in total crop area and other issues, leading to a spate of suicides.

Minister Amarjeet Bhagat said 21.52 lakh farmers were registered and procurement was done from 20.53 lakh farmers. There were no irregularities in the cropping area.

There are around 39 lakh farmers having more than 46 lakh hectares. It was not mandatory for farmers to sell their produce. Those registered could sell, he said.

Agrawal sought to know why apart from the registered farmers, the other farmers have not been covered by the Rajiv Gandhi Nyay Scheme.

The Minister said details are available with the Agriculture Department. Not satisfied with the answers, BJP leaders trooped out of the House while slogans against the government.
