Anoop Varma shares a few reasons why chemical-free food industry is expected to see an accelerated demand in the coming years

The organic food industry is not a new concept in India. The wave towards it started almost a decade ago and there has been no looking back ever since then. Gradually, people have become more conscious of healthy eating. One of the reasons for this is the side effects of artificial chemicals in food, which have led to various lifestyle concerns. The growth in the e-commerce sector has acted as a gift for this industry as now they can reach out to consumers directly. Here are a few reasons why the organic food industry is expected to see an accelerated demand in the coming years.

Awareness of eating right

People are realising that holistic health is from eating right as opposed to depending on medication or supplements. Artificial chemicals were used in food items that were causing changes in hormones, which were further creating health and lifestyle issues. People have become more health-conscious and as a result, they are now focussing more on eating organic food items which are served to them straight from the farms.

Easy accessibility

Due to the surge of smart-phone usage in India, there has been an increase in access to information about organic food. E-commerce platforms acted as a bridge for reaching out to potential customers across the country. Due to the heavy usage of the internet, people have started ordering food online, which is making their life much easier. Delivering organic food at home is a new trend in the market, which not only attracts consumers to buy but also creates a platform for future generations to have easy access to such foods.

Indirect support to small ventures

The majority of organic farms are smaller than their conventional counterparts. Small farms don’t receive the same benefits from the economies of scale that large operations do and sometimes it may cost them a bit more. This is where big companies help small farmers to survive by creating jobs for them if that food were produced using conventional agricultural methods. Due to the support by big companies, small ventures gain the confidence to start cultivating organic farms.

Increase in export

The demand for Indian organic food has witnessed a steady rise in India but it is receiving appreciation all over the globe. Due to India’s favorable agro-climatic conditions, the quality of organic food to export is very high. If we continue to supply with the same growth as today then this export trend will definitely increase in the next five years.

Food kits

Creating food kits is a new normal nowadays. Many companies are adopting this technique to gain people’s interest. These kits have just taken place after the pandemic when people started having doubts about food items. These food items are cooked up to 3/4th of 100 per cent, and are well-packed with proper cooking instructions. As we know we have to start living with the fact that COVID-19 is here to stay for some time, the trend towards ready to eat and ready to cook organic meals at home is the way forward.

The organic food industry will witness a humongous rise in the next five years. The industry is still naive and in an emerging phase. But it has huge growth potential and may even contribute to the economic growth of the country in the long run.
