With Punjab Cong infighting at peak, new in-charge Yadav to steer the ship

Tuesday, 26 December 2023 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

In a dramatic turn of events for the Punjab Congress, a pivotal meeting is poised to unfold on Tuesday evening between the state leadership and the party high command in the national capital. The stage is set for a high-stakes discussion, centering around internal conflicts, notably featuring the charismatic senior leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Partap Singh Bajwa; and the intriguing prospect of forging an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the ensuing 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Taking the helm of these crucial deliberations is none other than Devender Yadav, the recently anointed political affairs in-charge for Punjab Congress, ready to navigate the turbulent waters of factionalism that threaten the very fabric of the party’s unity.

The internal dynamics within the Punjab Congress have been marked by a visible rift, prominently highlighted by a war of words among senior leaders. Bajwa openly accused Sidhu of undermining party cohesion by organizing separate rallies and creating a parallel forum within the Congress. Bajwa went further to attribute the party’s electoral setback in 2022 to the then party chief Sidhu’s actions, setting the stage for a public exchange of allegations.

In response, Sidhu utilized social media as a platform to counter the accusations, sharing posts through his supporters, including Malwinder Singh Mali. Sidhu claimed that neither he nor five former MLAs were invited to state party events, presenting his narrative of exclusion from crucial party activities. The public spat not only tarnished the image of the Congress but also revealed the deep-seated internal discord that has persisted since the 2022 assembly elections that cost the party a resounding defeat.

Political observers argued that the failure to reconcile these internal differences might replicate the setback faced by the party in the 2022 assembly elections.

With Delhi Congress leader and former MLA Devender Yadav taking over as in-charge of party’s state affairs, the high command is hopeful that his experience and diplomatic skills will help bridge the widening gaps within the Punjab Congress. Yadav emphasized the importance of inclusive decision-making, stating, “In Congress, we take decisions on the basis of what our local leaders think and what people think…everyone will be given a chance to express their opinion… whatever cumulative decision will be taken, that everyone has to abide by.”

The immediate challenge for Yadav is to bring about reconciliation among the senior leaders through dialogue and consensus-building. He expressed confidence in his ability to navigate the complex internal landscape, asserting, “I prefer sitting together for conflict resolution. We will go into the Lok Sabha elections as united.”

The stakes are high for the Congress in Punjab as failure to reconcile internal differences could significantly dent the party's prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, mirroring the setbacks faced in the 2022 assembly polls. Yadav's role becomes even more crucial as he endeavors to rebuild the party's consensus and momentum, transforming it into a competitive force emerging from the shadows of defeat.

A key dimension of the internal strife is the ongoing debate within the party regarding a potential alliance with AAP — the ruling party in Punjab. While AAP is a constituent of the Congress-led Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) preparing to challenge the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2024 general elections, the prospect of aligning with AAP at the state level has been met with resistance from the Punjab Congress leadership.

Yadav acknowledged the delicate nature of this issue and outlined his plan to gather feedback from the state party leadership regarding the potential alliance. The 51-year-old from Delhi faces the daunting task of persuading the state Congress leadership to consider collaboration with AAP if such a directive comes from the party high command.

AAP’s significance in Punjab adds complexity to the equation, as it not only serves as a key player in the larger alliance but also governs the state, where the Congress functions as the principal opposition. Yadav’s diplomatic mission extends beyond internal party matters to navigating the intricate landscape of political alliances, testing his ability to strike a balance that aligns with the party's larger strategic objectives.

The upcoming Lok Sabha elections loom large over these deliberations, and the decisions made in the aftermath of the crucial meeting will shape the Congress's trajectory in the state. Yadav, cognizant of the challenges, affirmed, "The Punjab Congress is a formidable force already, and my job is to make it stronger for the coming polls."

As the Punjab Congress leaders continue their discussions in Delhi, the outcome will not only determine the party's approach to the Lok Sabha elections but will also set the tone for potential collaborations, reflecting the intricate dance of alliances and internal reconciliation essential for political success. Devender Yadav's role as the mediator and unifier remains pivotal in steering the party through these turbulent waters and positioning it for a formidable resurgence on the electoral stage.
