Mamata raps Centre

Friday, 16 February 2024 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the BJP Government for running a regime that was "worse" than the one being run by the Pakistanis or Adolf Hitler or even demon king Ravana of Ramayana.

"The way they are running the Government that even Hitler, Mussolini or those ruling in Pakistan will be put to shame," Banerjee who was delivering a speech in the State Assembly said. Saying that she had postponed her visit to Punjab in support of the farmers who had been stopped by the powers that be at Shambhu and Khanauri borders and who were allegedly being tormented by the Centre, Banerjee said, "the farmers are protesting and the country is burning. But the BJP Government is not at all concerned about them … they have crossed all the Laxman Rekha like Ravan --- in dealing with the farmers --- but they will understand once they reach Delhi."

Wondering as to what was happening in the country at present Banerjee said, "they are bringing draconian laws and putting opponents to jail every day," Banerjee said adding "one a person is put behind the bars he remains there for eternity without trial or anything … they are not given bail."

Reminding that no one remains in power for eternity, Banerjee said, "today you are in power … but you will not remain in power for all the time to come … no one remains in power for all the time … so the law your are using to send the opponents to jail may be used against you tomorrow … then what will you do."  Raising for the first time the issue of Electronic Voting Machine the Chief Minister expressed doubts about how the Centre was fiddling with the EVM machines. "One does not know what is being done to the EVMs … they are changing the EVMs and winning elections," she said adding how after winning polls they were imposing their will on the people.

"You have set the country on fire … there is hatred everywhere and you are thriving on that hatred … you are stoking riots … setting one caste or community against the others," Banerjee said alleging how after coming to power in Rajasthan the BJP government had shut down all the non-vegetarian shops.

"Soon after coming to power they shut down all the shops selling eggs, chicken or mutton ... they are not only using bull-dozers on the non-veg shops but they are also bull-dozing the poor man's livelihood … it should be my choice as to what I should eat … who are you to dictate me on that … it is a democratic country that this Government is not ready to honour," Banerjee said.
