Following the violent clash between members of two groups and the seizure of narcotic substances, the authorities have now decided to shift 20 inmates of the Jharpada jail to other prisons.

Permission has been sought from the concerned court to shift the Chakara and Shambu groups from Jharpada to other jails, said Director General (DG) of Prisons AM Prasad on Thursday.

According to Prasad, a report has been received in connection with the clash between the inmates. An investigation was also conducted by the Jail DIG and the Senior Superintendent after visiting the Jharpada jail and the report has been submitted to the Home Department, he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, four inmates were injured following a brawl between the Chakara and Shambu gangs. An inmate also allegedly lost his eye in the attack by rivals in the jail. A case in connection with the clash was also lodged at the Laxmisagar police station.

Later, the Commissionerate Police led by DCP Prateek Singh on Wednesday conducted a surprise raid in the jail and seized some ganja and tobacco products.

Meanwhile, the authorities have issued directions for strengthening security measures in the jail, which houses many dangerous criminals and habitual offenders.
