In a bid to enhance voter participation in urban areas, a pivotal meeting convened with representatives from universities, colleges, and schools chaired by the Deputy Development Commissioner cum Senior Officer of the Sveep Cell Manish Kumar. The gathering emphasized the imperative of conducting a robust voter awareness campaign within campus premises to galvanize young voters towards exercising their democratic rights.
Manish Kumar, Development Commissioner cum Senior Officer of Sveep Cell, underscored the significance of voting as an essential right of every citizen. He stressed that democracy's strength lies in citizens of all age groups comprehending the importance of voting and encouraging their peers, relatives, and neighbors to do the same. The meeting, held at the Collectorate Auditorium with university deans, professors, college principals, and school administrators, outlined various strategies to foster voter awareness.
A key proposal put forth during the meeting was the creation of "Sveep icons" within university, college, and school campuses. These icons would represent students with disabilities, academic achievers, and individuals actively involved in cultural and sports activities. The objective is to disseminate the message of voting to every household through voter awareness programs. The district administration's ongoing efforts aim to eradicate urban apathy towards voting, and cooperation from all stakeholders is solicited to boost the district's voting percentage and fortify democracy.
Acknowledging potential factors such as migration, disinterest in the voting process, and lack of awareness contributing to low voter turnout, the Deputy Development Commissioner stressed the importance of collective efforts in enlightening such individuals about the significance of participating in elections. Various activities including Form 6 filling, election schools, voter oath-taking, social media campaigns, environmental initiatives, and community engagements such as human chains and quizzes were discussed to engage and educate students about the electoral process.
To instill a sense of responsibility and enthusiasm among attendees, a voter oath was administered, followed by engaging activities aimed at raising awareness about voting. The Deputy Development Commissioner urged individuals not to treat election day as a mere holiday but to prioritize voting before engaging in other activities.
The meeting saw the presence of key officials including the Officer-in-charge of the Sveep Cell, District Welfare Officer, District Cooperative Officer, District Sports Officer, and Sveep Cell personnel. The concerted efforts of all stakeholders underscore the commitment towards fostering a culture of active citizenship and strengthening the democratic fabric of the nation.
