Mercury touches 42 degrees at Koderma

Wednesday, 30 April 2014 | Ajay Samar | Koderma

Quite unusual for the last week of April, mercury in the Mica town has touched 42 degree Celsius. The unusual heat of the summer season is playing tormentor for the school going children and the labour class especially.

A little after the day break, even at 8 o’clock in the morning a pedestrian can feel the pinch of heat. In order to avoid the brunt of harsh weather, umbrella carrying people trying to cool off themselves either with a glass of Sattu or Sharbat, which has become a common sight.

Air coolers in this hot weather is an obvious preference over ceiling fans that supply hot air from ceiling. Vendors dealing in refrigerators and earthen pots are doing brisk business. loadshedding in such a season is like adding salt to the injury. The erratic supply of water supply and many hands pumps remaining out of

orders is making the water crisis worse. Entire town is dependent on the sole water tank that was erected 5 decades back. The worst hit areas are Chitragupta Nagar, Taratand and Maduatand. The water supply plan is still incomplete that started 4 years backs.

Many of the wells are on the verge of drying up. Underground water level is going down alarmingly. So far, schools are following their regular timing however, some of the schools including Sacred Heart and Chlorophyll School have revised their timings in view of the rising para. Parents association has already made a formal request to the District Administration to instruct schools for reducing  the academics hours till para settles to a reasonable level.
