The Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has strongly resented the decision of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee to rusticate 73 students for poor grades. The State president of ABVP, Ramakant Srivastava said that the premier institute should give a chance to improve their grades. Terming the decision as very harsh, Srivastava said that getting into an IIT means a lot to the students and if due to any reason some students are not able to perform at the desired level then the institute should leave no stone unturned to help the students. He said that the extreme step of raises question mark over the system where students are selected through one of the toughest and most competitive examination in the world.
The ABVP state president said that the students should be familiarized with the rules pertaining to academic performance and effective monitoring system by the teachers should be in place to help the weak students and improve their grades. Srivastava said that in light of the fact that these students now cannot take the IITJEE this year which means they will effectively loose full two years the ABVP appeals that the IIT should be in a resolving mode and not in a denial mode. The IIT Roorkee recently expelled 73 students for securing less than 5 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in the first semester. The enraged students took the matter to the High Court which ordered the institute to let these students appear in back paper. The next hearing on the issue is slated on July 21.
