The State Archives Uttarakhand plans to organise theme-based exhibitions every month in Dehradun. The State Archives director Dr lalta Prasad said this while talking to The Pioneer at the exhibition of important historic documents of Uttarakhand organised by the Doon library and Research Centre here on Wednesday.
The exhibition inaugurated at DlRC by its director BK Joshi consisted of 45 historic documents from the State archives related to various aspects of Uttarakhand. The oldest document on display was a report dated July 22, 1858, regarding the 1857 uprising in Kumaon sent to the Governor of north west province.
Additional historic documents on display include those related to Swami Vivekananda’s arrival in Almora in 1902, the 1916 invitation card and guest list for the marriage of the then Tehri King Narendra Shah, a letter dating back to April 1923 regarding the establishment of the Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College (Rashtriya Indian Military College) and a 1925 letter regarding the appointment of a watchman for the Ashoka edicts site. Among the other documents showcased were, a 1928 document on the provision of penalty for parking car, lorry and tanga on Dehradun’s Rajpur Road; the 1929 imperial decree related to employment of Gorkhas in India; a Christmas card sent by freedom fighter Victor Mohan Joshi to Pundit Manohar Pant in 1928; a 1930 document on the role of Veer Chandra Singh Garhwal in the Peshawar incident and a Government order dated March 31, 1931 prohibiting Government teachers from participating in communal and political activities also elicited the interest of visitors to the exhibition.
The other records displayed here include a 1932 report on the education of girls, a 1947 letter regarding construction of the Clock Tower by Dehradun city board, punishment orders dated April 20, 1930 pertaining to the penal action against Narayan Datt Dangwal, Nardev Shastri, Bihari lal, Mahavir Tyagi and other activists for violation of the salt law at Kharakhet in Dehradun during the salt Satyagraha. In addition to these, copies of newspapers published from Uttarakhand during the Indian freedom movement including Shakti (1927, 1933), Kumaon Kumud (1937) Congress Bulletin (1937) and Pataka (1943) were also put in the exhibition. The display staged at the DlRC attracted a stream of visitors throughout the day.
