Zubaan
Cast: Vicky Kaushal, Sarah Jane Dias, Manish Chaudhari, Meghna Mallik, Raghav Chanana
Rated: 6/10
After seeing Vicky Kaushal in Masaan, a lot was expected from him in Zubaan. His acting is at par but one still misses his honest, innocent performance as a debutant.
The rags to riches story of a small town boy is an ageold theme. But Mozez Singh’s direction and Kaushal’s acting make it work at many levels. Dilsher (Kaushal) is dealing with a troubled past. He achieves success in the end but it wouldn’t be a Bollywood film if he hadn’t. To become a corporate success, Dilsher does questionable things. But Kaushal’s deft portrayal of the complexities washes away the negatives and leaves you wishing his life was sorted out earlier.
Add to that good performances by Manish Chaudhari as a ruthless and tortured businessman (Guru Sikand), his wife (Meghna Mallik) and son (Raghav Chanana) and you have a film worth a watch, once!
Despite being deemed a musical, the background score is listless except for the Punjabi piece sung by Dilsher and the shabad by his father. The film has a lot of confusing strands. The story of Amira, played by the gorgeous Sarah Jane Dias, remains unexplored. Besides, there’s no chemistry between her and Dilsher.
This one is not for those who like out and out Bollywood entertainers with lots of action and drama. Zubaan has a calm pace and subtlety.
