The Haryana Government has geared up for the effective implementation of National Rabies Control Programme in the State.
The Government has decided to provide motor able vehicles to the Non Government Organisations (NGOs) through respective Municipal Corporation or Municipal Committees.
A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting of State level Monitoring-cum-Coordination Committee held here on Monday to review the progress made under the animal component of National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP) in Hisar and Gurgaon Divisions. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary DS Dhesi.
It was informed in the meeting that under Hisar division, 18,550 sterilisations of dogs were performed. These included 9,060 female and 9,490 male dogs. Also, 48,874 anti rabies vaccinations were done.
The chairman, Animal Welfare Board, India (AWBI) Maj Gen (Retd) RM Kharb said that the work of animal birth control and mass anti-rabies vaccination will soon resume in Gurgaon division as AWBI had identified another NGO namely Friendicos Seca and a fresh Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed with them.
As per a survey, the total number of dogs in Haryana is over 25.36 lakh, including both street dogs and owned dogs. The number of street dogs is roughly 1,878,203 and that of confined dogs is 658,226. Accordingly, there are about ten dogs per 100 people of Haryana which is much higher than other parts of India where there are three to four dogs per 100 people.
According to the survey of Humane Society International (HIS) (India), there are about 61,300 stray dogs in Gurgaon city and owned dogs are 17,520. Total street dogs in Gurgaon division are estimated to be 5.47 lakh and in Gurgaon district, these are estimated to be 1.24 lakh.
